Laos Business and Tourist Visas

PLEASE NOTE: You will be required to submit your passport to the consulate. You will NOT have access to your passport until the visa process is finished by the consulate. Please plan accordingly. The consulate will not release your passport until the visa process is finished.

Visa Requirements

  • Your passport MUST be valid for AT LEAST 6 MONTHS, counting from the day you leave Laos.
  • Your passport MUST contain at least ONE blank, completely clear “VISAS” page (Amendments and Endorsement pages do not count).
  • Your passport MUST be signed and in good condition. The consulate staff may reject your passport if they find it to be in damaged condition, even if you don’t think that’s the case.

Parent or guardians MUST:

  • Sign the printed-out application page in the appropriate signature box
  • For adopted children: present original copy of adoption papers/court order
  • Present an original birth certificate
  • If you are a Laotian citizen and reside in the USA, you MUST travel to Laos on your VALID Laotian passport (in this case, no visa is needed). If you need to obtain a new Laotian passport, please contact us.
  • US citizens who were born in Laos MUST submit their previous US passports with visas to Laos (even if expired), or
  • Laotians who obtained US citizenship and formally renounced their Laotian citizenship MUST submit an original document/certificate as proof of Laotian citizenship renunciation. Applicants who have not renounced their previous Laotian citizenship are not eligible for a visa and must travel to Laos using BOTH their US and Laotian valid passports.

Additional requirements for those who are traveling for business purposes:

a) Business Invitation Letter:

A business invitation letter from the sponsoring company in Laos is now required. The letter must be printed on company letterhead stationery, addressed to “The Consulate of Laos, Visa Section”, and signed by a senior manager (an equivalent to Vice-President or above) and stamped with the company seal. The business letter must include the following information:

  • Personal information of the applicant: name, gender, date of birth, passport details, and job title.
  • State the nature of the business to be conducted (ie. business meetings, contract negotiations, etc.), the dates of the visit, and the names and addresses of companies to be contacted in Laos.
  • Specify the type and desired validity of the visa (ie. a one year multiple entry business visa).
  • State who will bear the costs of the applicant’s accommodations in Laos.

b) Employer Business Letter:

A business letter from the US employer. The letter must be printed on the company letterhead stationery, addressed to “The Consulate of Laos, Visa Section”, and signed by a senior manager (an equivalent to Vice-President or above) and stamped with the company seal. The business letter must include the following information:

  • Personal information of the applicant: name and job title.
  • State the nature of the business to be conducted (ie. business meetings, contract negotiations, etc.), the dates of the visit, and the names and addresses of companies to be contacted in Laos.
  • Specify the type of activities in Laos (ie. meetings, contract discussions, trade-shows, etc.).
  • State who will bear the costs of the applicant’s accommodations in Laos.

  • You MUST present a copy of your government issued ID: driver’s license, state ID card – to prove that you reside within the consulate’s jurisdiction.

Also the following American islands in the Pacific: Johnston, Midway, Wake, Howland, Jarvis and Baker, Palmira and Kingman.

    • Forms must be typed-in and signed by hand, but they CANNOT be hand-written.
  • HOW TO FILL OUT YOUR VISA APPLICATION FORM:
    • You MUST insert the FULL hotel address information, including the local ZIP code.
    • Applicants who were born in Laos, Hong Kong or Taiwan MUST write their names in Laotian characters as requested on the form.
    • Make sure to input your full occupation description information.
    • Please SIGN the form to match the passport signature. All applicants over the age of 18 MUST sign their own application form.
  • Professional passport-type photograph: 2
  • You MUST present a copy of your government issued ID: driver’s license, state ID card – to prove that you reside within the consulate’s jurisdiction.
  • Make sure to enter a home address on the application form that reflects the traveler’s home address as being in: Southern California, Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico and American Pacific islands.
  • Copy of round trip or cruise-line tickets or tentative itinerary, printed from online vendor or travel agency letterhead.
  • If you have trouble printing your form or itinerary, you are welcome to email it as an attachment to us at info@aristavisa.com and we will be glad to print it for you at our office.

    • If you would like to pay for your consulate fee using a credit card through Arista, a convenience charge of 3% will be added to the consulate fee amount.
    • The Laotian consulate in Washington, DC does not offer rush or expedited processing.
    • Processing times are based on the Laotian consulate business days: Monday through Thursday only. Saturday, Sunday, Laotian and US Holidays do NOT count as business days.
    • The Laotian consulate in Washington, DC may change their processing times without notice. Please make sure that your departure dates do not conflict with the consulate visa release date.

Payment Options:

  4. Pay for the Arista service fees separately (by check, credit/debit card, cash, etc).
Shipping documents back to you:

  • Please provide us a return method for return shipments, such as an air-bill, credit card info, or a prepaid envelope.
  • Per your request, we may ship your documents back to you by FedEx only, and add our flat shipping charge to the total fee for the services provided to you.
